Cea mai cunoscută viziune distopica a lumii viitorului, romanul (scris în 1949) este tabloul apocaliptic al unei Londre din era post-atomică, sediul unui regim totalitar în care orice logică pare a fi fost abolită. Epurările şi evaporările au devenit un lucru firesc, trecutul este rescris mereu spre a corespunde prezentului, iar instrumentul propagandei este odioasă „nouvorba”, o limbă mecanicistă care completează imaginea de lume ordonată ştiinţific. În imperiul fricii absolute şi sub ochii necruţători ai Fratelui cel Mare, libertatea individuală a fost pe vecie eradicată.
